A trip to Africa
changed my life.

In 2017, I traveled to Africa for 16 days to teach hospitality management to college students at Stawa University in Uganda.
My life changed when I met those students and the people of Uganda.

During my visit I had the fortune to tour two grade schools. The buildings were single brick structures with one wooden door and dirt floors. The tables and chairs were made of cinder block and wood. The students wrote with broken crayons on ripped paper and lessons were barely hanging off the wall with a small piece of tape.

Their clothing was tattered and didn’t fit, while their sandals just barely covered their little toes hanging off the front of the shoe, some of them wore mismatched shoes.  One little girl, we nicknamed her Princess because she wore a pink princess dress, was so adorable, Her dress was falling off but when I went to zip it back up, I realized the zipper was broken.

And yet, every single child in that room had the biggest smile on their face.

To experience a world where people truly have nothing but the tattered clothes on their back and were still living a happy life, made me drastically reevaluate what I took for granted in my own personal life.

Having struggled with anxiety for most of my adult life, I was constantly worried about being good enough, having the confidence to be a leader and pursue my goals. There were times when fear gripped me to the point where I couldn't make the simplest decisions like what to wear that day.

Ever since my trip, i've made it a top priority to bring gratitude, humility and empathy into everything that I do.

I have come a long way

Through years of struggle, through the help of friends, family, therapy and faith, I am able to move forward with my life with improved confidence.

I’ve pushed through my fears and doubts and have held successful positions in management, academia, and now executive coaching. I share this for those of you who fell stuck and think there is no way out.

There is a way out, it just takes time and commitment.

I know what it means to struggle

"Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world, you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And, in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you."
